The Winchester Model 1887 is a lever action shotgun designed by john moses browning and produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, maker of the famous Winchester model 1873. It was one of the first successful repeating shotgun designs, but was done so before the proliferation of smokeless gunpowder, which proved too powerful for the design to contain. In addition, pump action shotguns proved more popular for the new gunpowder mixture, and after the advent of the Winchester Model 1897, interest in the older model quickly waned.
