Egg-shaped fruit having a glossy skin and white flesh. Usually has a purple skin, but also comes in other colors such as white and orange. Used as a vegetable in cooking, closely related to tomato and potato. Also refers to the plant, which is a hairy herb of the nightshade family. Also known as an "aubergine" in the UK and Ireland.
